Rated 3 out of 5 by from Powerful and effective with a couple minor issues. I am a big RYOBI ONE+ fan and this was my first 40v purchase. I've had the 40v trimmer/edger for a little over a year. It gets the job done, plenty of power and battery life. I can do my yard twice between charges. The issues are: Weight it is a bit on the heavy side and I probably could have gotten away with a one+. Battery removal is a bit difficult. String advancement is not optimal. Definitely would not buy this type of trimmer again for this reason.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really versatile. I love it This thing edges and trims and easily converts between functions in 2 seconds with a toe tap. The line auto feed works well by inching out a little bit after releasing and re-pulling the trigger. Easy to rewind more line. Uses .080 line. Don"t use if you have a lot of heavy heavy edging. But if it smokes they will quickly replace it. Battery lasts 1 hour at low to medium speed....normal usage. Charges in 1 hour. I love mine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Serves it's purpose, but . . . Bought a year ago, only used it about 5 times before the motor burned out. I also have a Ryobi mower with 2 batteries. I was trimming my yard and used up one battery after about 40 minutes, but still had over half the yard to do. Switched to a fresh battery and continued. After about another 30 minutes I began to smell an electrical burn type of odor and then the trimmer just stopped. At first I thought I used up the second battery and switched to the third, but the trimmer would not work. Since the unit was still under the extended warranty, I took it in for repair and they replaced the motor, battery and charger. Bottom line - don't run the trimmer longer than the battery run time without giving the motor ample time to cool down. It just can't handle the long jobs. Also, it seems the heat generated by the motor tends to melt the line inside the spool. This causes the line to fuse together and not feed properly. Maybe Ryobi needs to incorporate some type of air cooling system of heat sink to control overheating. Lastly, another issue I've observed with the unit - the line will also retract back into the spool as the supply diminishes and the spool loosens up. There is no method to keeping the spool tight. Other than that, I am still satisfied with the unit for what I paid for it, and the work that I am able to eventually get done. But, if I had to by another or replace this one, I would probably look for a better unit. If anyone is considering purchasing the Ryobi Trimmers, do your homework and consider all alternatives first. If money is not an issue, there are better more expensive units available. But if you have a limited budget and the jobs are small, then the Ryobi might be a good choice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome 2 in 1 Great tool for medium size yard, have yet to use entire battery on one charge. Doesn't hurt to have extra battery on standby if you have any other 40V tools. Edger works just as well as stand alone edger. Only gripe was original amount of string. Spool was half full, and it goes fast if you have a lot of concrete curbing surrounding your yard. Overall, excellent tool and don't regret the purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but not excellent trimmer I have had my trimmer since last fall. It has some excellent points and a couple that are a problem. The good points: battery is great. It is long lasting and makes the trimmer superior to a gas trimmer. Body of trimmer is rugged and well made. I also purchased the large blower without a battery. I can do all my trimming and blow everything off and still have power left in the battery. Bad points: trimmer line is too small in diameter and breaks very easy. A more robust line would save a lot of cuss words. Overall, the trimmer and the battery are quite heavy. If you have a large area to trim your arms will be tired before you get done. I have found that the longer you use the trimmer the better the line functions but it still breaks frequently. Other suggestion is that you buy a three pack of the line spools and refill the spools yourself. Otherwise, you will go broke buying spools. They are pricey.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 3 Batteries I've had to replace the battery for this 3 times in six months. Batteries won't recharge. They sent a new one. Recieved it in 3 weeks used once and wouldn't recharge. Next time I drove 100 miles to a Ryobi service center to get a new battery. After using this once the battery wouldn't recharge. Have been through 3 batteries and am now giving up. Would NOT recommend this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bought it in Aug., 2014. Not happy Bought it Aug. 2014. Was OK but a lack of power. 13 mo. later the string quit coming out automatically, now have to turn it upside down and let out string manually. A hassle to use. String is small so it does not last long. Used on a city lot for trimming only and not on every mowing. Battery only last 40 min. after it was used one season. Not for my to like.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 40V trimmer/edger I like this trimmer a lot. It is a little on the heavy side and I have to keep switching arms to hold it with. My one dislike is how much the string breaks off. It lasts only a few minutes and then it breaks. I think it is due to the speed of rotation. They just came out with a new head that I purchased and that has helped some.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Powerful tool. I have used this Trimmer/Edger several times. It is a powerful tool with plenty of battery life. My only problem is my age and health. I am 81 years old with arthritis in my hands and wrists. Plus, other health conditions limit my use of the tool because of its weight. Otherwise, I consider this tool an excellent choice.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Early Battery Replacement Bought one about 2 months ago, and only used about 8 times. Now battery says it needs replacement. Minimal use, kept in house, and replacement battery is $99. Let down by Quality, but decent trimmer when it worked. Do the math, I could hire a lawn service to do it all for the cost of replacing a battery every 8 weeks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Freedom to move about the yard!!! Bought this last year and it does everything I hoped it would. No gasoline to mess around with or cords that crimp my moving about to do things. Weed wacks and edges as needed. With this I can circuit the yard and do all my trimming needs. Reloading more line is a breeze.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and easy to use, even for my wife. Have been using the unit for a few months now and can provide a better feedback. House is on standard 1/4 lot with front and back yard: Cons: -The kick-plate to switch from Trim to Edge stopped working properly after 3 months. It seems stuff keeps getting stuck in the mechanism and does not allow it to engage. Try my best to clean the unit after ease use but seem things still get in and intefere -Small battery (OP4015) depletes too fast to complete one task (either Trim or edge) -Getting the battery released can be a hassle at times. Have learned to push the battery from the bottom while engaging the release from the top. Pros: -Big battery (OP4026) lasts long enough to complete the front with Edge and trim -Light and easy to use -Edger works great like my older gas powered edger. -Wife can use it if she wants -Auto feed for reel is nice but can be annoying if you keep turning the unit on and off -Like the remaining battery power status LEDs. -Big battery (OP4026) lasts long enough to complete the front with Edge and trim

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good battery life I purchased this last year. So Have used it a lot. Battery life is better than I anticipated. The only downside is that to advance the string you have to stop and start it, and it must stop spinning or it will not advance. I have now gotten used to that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No fuss, quiet and versatile able to edge/trim a 40 x 100 on one charge, the battery is durable as i leave it in the unheated garage all year and it works fine. Replacement spools are costly and the no bump feeder needs some attention now and then to work effectively.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great trimmer, bad battery Purchased last year. Love the trimmer. No gas, no oil, easy to use. Battery did not hold up over winter storage. Very weak trimmer when using the battery from last year. With a new battery the trimmer works beautifully, like last year.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from solid performer I bought this summer of 2015 works well and battery last for 40 minutes which is more than enough time for my yard Only negative is it burns thru the string pretty fast I went thru 3 spools for the year

Rated 4 out of 5 by from nice edger I brought this last year and so far I like the way it performs .I put a heavy duty string in and it works great. The battery has a gauge on it to tell you how much charge is left .A very good feature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gas like power! Best string trimmer investment I've made yet. I've had several gas trimmers over the years and just got tired of mixing fuel and the smell from the exhaust. Decided to try cordless electric.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use! I bought it last year and I love how easy it is to use. You just pop in the battery and go. It has an easy push pedal on it which changes it easily to do the edging. It has multiple uses!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 40v sring trimmer I have had this for almost 1 year. Works very well and has a perfect battery charge duration. One drawback is the price of replacement spools are almost twice other brands.

What is the best way to cut weeds and grass using my string trimmer?

  • Keep your string trimmer tilted toward the area being cut
  • Pass the unit from left to right (if using a curved shaft string trimmer) and from right to left (if using a straight shaft string trimmer). By following these directional cutting paths, you will avoid having debris and grass clippings from being directed back at yourself.
  • Use the top of the line to do the cutting. Do not force the string head into uncut grass; this could cause the trimmer to bog down.
  • Avoid trees, shrubs wire and picket fences.

How do I attach the grass deflector on my RYOBI Cordless String Trimmer?

  • Remove the battery.
  • Remove the plastic hardware bag from the grass deflector.
  • Fit the grass deflector over the string head.
  • Line up the screw holes in the grass deflector with the holes in the motor housing.
  • Install supplied screws and tighten by turning clockwise with a phillips screwdriver.

How do I start and stop my RYOBI Cordless String Trimmer?

To Start:

  • Press and hold the lock-out button.
  • Depress the switch trigger

To Stop:

  • Release the switch trigger to stop the string trimmer.
  • Upon release of the switch trigger, the lock-out button will automatically reset to the locked position.

How do I advance the line on my RYOBI Cordless String Trimmer?

NOTE: Your RYOBI Cordless String Trimmer is equipped with an auto-feed head. Bumping the head to try to advance the line will damage the trimmer and void the warranty.

  • With the trimmer running, release the switch trigger.
  • Wait two seconds, and press the switch trigger again.

NOTE: The line will extend approximately ¼ in. with each stop and start of the switch trigger until the line reaches the length of the cut-off blade.

  • Resume trimming.

How do I manually advance the line on my RYOBI Cordless String Trimmer?

  • Remove the battery.
  • Push the black button located on the string head while pulling on the line to manually advance the line.

How do I switch from trimming to edging on my RYOBI 24V or 40V String Trimmer?

  • Remove the battery pack.
  • Step down on the foot pedal.
  • Rotate the trimmer head counterclockwise placing the tool in the edger position.

How do I replace the spool on my RYOBI Cordless String Trimmer?

NOTE: Use only .065 in. round or .080 in. twisted monofilament line.

  • Remove the battery pack.
  • Push in tabs on side of spool retainer.
  • Pull spool retainer up to remove.
  • Remove the old spool.
  • To install the new spool, make sure the line is captured in the slot on the new spool. Make sure the end of the line is extended approximately 5 in. beyond the slot.
  • Install the new spool so that the line and slot align with the eyelet in the string head. Thread the line into the eyelet.
  • Pull the line extending from the string head so the line releases from the slot in the spool. Reinstall the spool retainer by dressing tabs into slots and pushing down until spool retainer clicks into place.

How do I replace the line on my RYOBI Cordless String Trimmer?

  • Remove the battery pack.
  • Remove the spool from the string head.
  • NOTE: Remove any old line remaining on the spool.
  • Cut a piece of line approximately 9 ft. long. Use only .065 in. round or .080 in. twisted monofilament line.
  • Insert the line into the anchor hole in the upper part of the spool. Wind the line around the supper part of the spool clockwise, as shown by the arrows on the spool. Place line in the slot on upper spool flange, leaving about 6 in. extended beyond the slot. Do not overfill. After winding the line, there should be at least ¼ in. between the wound line and the outside edge of the spool.
  • Replace the plastic retainer spool and the spool cap.

How do I store my RYOBI Cordless String Trimmer?

  • Remove the battery from the string trimmer before storing.
  • Clean all foreign material from the trimmer.
  • Store the unit in a place that is inaccessible to children and away from corrosive agents such as garden chemicals and de-icing salts.

What do I do if my RYOBI Cordless String Trimmer won’t start?
