EXPAND-IT Straight Shaft Trimmer Attachment is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 91.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful and easy My first "big" outdoor power tool purchase and I now love yard work! Having a 40V cordless trimmer makes chores in the yard a breeze. It's not heavy to handle, and I wasn't bothered by any vibration. It was easy to tilt for edging too! I recommended it to my boss and he loves his too! I feel like Tim Allen on "Tool Time" making manly grunts.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mixed bag. I've used the new trimmer a few times, it dies a good job but is a but of a challenge to get used to. I have always used curved shaft trimmers in the past so that may be part of my problem. The trimmer head spins backwards from what i am used to, so I am having a time adjusting to that. One of my bushes has felt the wrath of me not knowing exactly where the trimmer is because I have to position differently while trimming. I'll adjust in time. The spool only holds 14 feet of line total, so 7 feet for each side since it's a double line head. The head is very fiddly and difficult to re-install after adding new line, i messed with it for over a half an hour trying to get the spool back on and feeding correctly. A difficult install on a head that only holds 14 feet of line is a huge double whammy. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't buy this again, and kind of wish they had a curved shaft trimmer in stock the day I needed a replacement for my old one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ryobi string trimmer I bought this a few weeks ago and really enjoy using it with the Ryobi head that I purchased earlier this year to use with my pole saw. I also bought and edger prior to the trimmer and enjoy using all the attachments. Makes my job much easier and not near as tired at the end of the chore. Appreciate your Ryobi products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very easy to use right out the box Trimmer head was ready to go out the box. Had line already loaded and cut to the correct length. Even came with extra line. Removed it from the box and in less time it took for the power head to warm up I was ready to go. Great product feels very sturdy and if you register your product you get the 3 year guarantee.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good trimmer Replaced a corded trimmer with the 40v-x expand it unit with this attachment. Works great clearing weeds a rally grass. Very had to use as an edger or to get into tight places. Plenty of cutting power. Hope to get the brush clearing attachment for the area behind my yard filled with trees.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice trimmer attachment This unit replaced my previous Ryobi attachment that couldn't be serviced anymore after 5-6 years. The straight shafts allows you to trim under shrubs and decks more easily than a curved shafts trimmer does. I've had great success with Ryobi products so I stuck with them for this new trimmer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's okay It's okay for what it's worth and more. However, it eats too much line. Might be because I'm triming mainly agains hard surfaces like a wooden fence and my house's exterior walls, but isn't that for what trimmera are for? I have to keep stopping to feed it. Other than that it's fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Portability I bought my 40V cordless trimmer a year ago for the convenience of the unit. I just charge the battery and go. With over an acre of yard to trim I am happy with the power and that I can get it done on one charge without the hassle of extension cords or heat of the gas motor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This thing rocks! I have owned this for over a year and I still LOVE it! I own a 1 acre horse property with a small pasture. I have no problem trimming the front yard, the back yard and the pasture with 1 battery! It has plenty of power and I love the freedom of not having a cord. LOVE IT!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Trimmer This trimmer came with the powerhead. I honestly wasn't interested in using it, but was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked with my 40V unit. They go together very well. It is a powerful wide swath that does the job quickly. I won't be using my old unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't beat it! I've had this all summer and been very pleased with it. I can easily do all the trim front and back yard on one charge. You can't beat the fact that it's push button and go, fuel, pull starting ,just make sure battery charged and go to work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Straight trimmer attachment The first Ryobi string trimmer that I purchased was about 7 years ago. The powerhead runs great, with some carburetor adjustments, but I had to repurchase a straight trimmer attachment. It cuts grass like an angry billy goat!

What is the best way to cut weeds and grass using my string trimmer?

  • Keep your string trimmer tilted toward the area being cut
  • Pass the unit from left to right (if using a curved shaft string trimmer) and from right to left (if using a straight shaft string trimmer). By following these directional cutting paths, you will avoid having debris and grass clippings from being directed back at yourself.
  • Use the top of the line to do the cutting. Do not force the string head into uncut grass; this could cause the trimmer to bog down.
  • Avoid trees, shrubs wire and picket fences.

How do I advance the line on my REEL-EASY™ String Head?

Line advance is controlled by tapping the string trimmer head on grass while running engine at full throttle

  • Run the engine at full throttle
  • Tap the knob on ground to advance line. The line advances each time the knob is tapped. Do not hold the knob on the ground

NOTE: The line trimming cut-off blade on the grass deflector will cut the line to the correct length

NOTE: If the line is worn too short, you may not be able to advance the string by tapping it on the ground. If so, stop the engine and manually advance the line.

How do I manually advance the line on my REEL-EASY™ String Head?

  • Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire to ensure you will not be harmed
  • Push the knob in while pulling on line(s) to manually advance the line

How do I replace the line on my REEL-EASY™ String Head?

  • Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire to ensure you will be safe while replacing the line.
  • Rotate the spool clockwise as necessary to align the arrows on the spool.
  • Cut one piece of trimmer line at approx. 20ft. in length. Insert the line in the eyelet on the string trimmer housing. Push until the end of the line comes out the opposite side of the string head. Pull the line from the other side until equal amounts of line are on both sides of the spool.
  • Rotate the spool clockwise to wind the line on the spool until approx. 6 in. of line is showing on each side.
  • Push the spool retainer down while pulling on line(s) to manually advance line and to check for proper assembly of the on the string head.

How do I remove the attachment from my RYOBI Power Head?

  • Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug (if a gas unit), remove the battery (if using RYOBI 40V Power Head)
  • Loosen the knob at the connection point
  • Push in the button and twist the shafts to remove and separate the Power Head from the Attachment

How do I install my attachment to my RYOBI Power Head?

  • Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug (if using a RYOBI Gas Power Head); remove the battery (if using the RYOBI 40V Power Head).
  • Loosen the knob on the coupler of the power head shaft and remove the end cap from the attachment (black rubber piece with loop hole for hanging).
  • Push in the silver button located on the attachment shaft. Align the button with the guide recess on the Power Head coupler and slide the two shafts together. Rotate the attachment shaft until the button locks into the positioning hole.

NOTE: If the button does not release completely in the positioning hole, the shafts are not locked into place. Slightly rotate from side to side until the button is locked into place.

  • Tighten the knob securely.
