40V-X Expand-It String Trimmer is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 166.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from love it Have used this trimmer for over a year. The weight is a little heavy, but it is balanced very well. I can trim my plant beds, trees and sidewalks without getting tired. I trim my yard three times before needing to charge the battery. I have used gas trimmers that were hard to start and noisy, vibrations would numb my hands. Electric trimmers that I would have to backtrack with to untangle the cord that got caught in plants or around trees. This trimmer is quite with good balance and easy to maneuver. In short...... I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plenty of power! Bought this a month ago because we were tired of always filling gas cans and dealing with no/hard to start issues. Seems weed eaters only last a year or year and a half anymore. We have tons of Ryobi power tools and figured what the heck. This thing is awesome. 40V has plenty of power and feels as good as the gas power head does. This ones lighter and better balanced. We have 1/3 acre lot and to weed eat and edge it takes a battery and a half. No problem, weed eat/edge as much as I can, put it on the charger and mow. By the time I'm done mowing it's charged and I finish! Great purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hard to thread string I purchased this about a year ago, love it. Easy to use, reasonably light weight. The two issues I have, the batteries don't last as long 1 yr down the road. I purchased a blower and hedge trimmer to have extra batteries..and now the string is impossible to thread. Poor design. Trying to get warranty replacement, however unable to submit a trouble ticket online. I think they should give at least 2 batteries w/ the initial unit, and if the string head design is improved...this would be perfect..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good wireless string trimmer I've been pretty happy with this trimmer and it's met all my needs. Battery life is better than expected, or rather, I've completed everything that I needed to before the battery gave out (but I have a small yard in a typical suburban neighborhood). Number #1 reason I bought this trimmer was so that it could share 40v batteries with the Ryobi Jet Blower; I'd be hesitant to only have a single battery in case I forgot to charge it or it otherwise ran out of juice. The other selling point for me was the modular attachments (purchased separately), although I've yet to try any other than the string trimmer. It's not cheap by any means, but I don't have to mess with cords or gas, which makes it worth the extra cost.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the money and hassle free. This is light-weight in comparison to gas trimmers. The best part is you can start and stop it with ease. It is not very loud at all. It can also have separate attachments hooked to it such as an edger and tree trimming blade. I was skeptical at first but thought I would give it a try. I am definitely not disappointed! Would probably buy an extra battery if you have a large yard. The charge lasts a good amount of time, but you may need a backup just in case. Looking at buying battery operated lawn equipment from now on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing peice of equipment!! I bought this at the end of the Fall of 2015, and have used dozens of time since. The trimmer is lightweight and the battery last quite a while (I live on a third of an acre) and can get a couple of trimmings in with a single charge. Much better than smelling like mixed gasoline after trimmer. I am looking into buying some attachments this summer and mainly bought as this tool can do a lot. Overall, lightweight, last a long time and have had no issues with the string. Would highly recommend to anyone out there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a workhorse! I bought the expand it trimmer 3 month ago along with a brush cutter attachment. Not only does it handle all my trimming needs at my house in town, it's also doing a fantastic job at helping me clear my rural overgrown property.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replace my gas trimmer, so far so good I bought this trimmer to replace my old gas trimmer i had for 12 years. I was skeptical at first, but since I bought it at HD, i knew they would take it back if it didn't meet my expectations. My main purpose was for edging so I know I could add the edging attachment if necessary. Even though the power is a little less than the gas, it is adequate. The big plus is its lighter, easier to handle, no ropes to tug on, and no gas to mix. The battery has enough power to for about 30-40 minutes which will do just about my entire yard. The strings seem to last longer than the gas trimmer even though they are a little smaller (.080 vs 0.105). Right now, I have no plans to buy the edger attachment. The trimmer does a good job. I would recommend to folks that are tired of hassling with the gas trimmer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GreatTool!!! I bought this last summer and used it 5-6 times and now have started back this year and I am very happy with my purchase. I can trim and edge my front and back yard one one charge. When I'm done the battery is done also. The unit works great on regular grass and weeds. It has some issues with vines and big weeds if the battery is getting low but that's it. Heck my wife is using it also and likes it better than the gas machines due to the lighter weight and the controls are easier to use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well balanced I bought this trimmer last summer along with the 20" 40V mower. This trimmer is a great compliment to the mower. I can do all the trimming around the house, flowerbeds and fence and then flip it sideways to edge the driveway and sidewalks. The edging does go through the string faster, but I've found that to be the case with all string trimmers used for edging. the bump action to advance the line can take a few hard hits, but that is the only "con" that I would have for this trimmer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BIG SKEPTIC! I did not believe that this product could do as claimed; I bought it anyway. I wanted to prove to myself and to my son, that some companies make these outrageous claims about their product(s), only to find that it does not do what they claim and you just wasted your money: I told my son that we were going to be taking this item back. Much to my surprise, this product not only performed, but did better than I expected! IT'S GREAT!!! And most of all, no cord.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An OK cordless weed eater. Functionally OK 40v weed eater. I got the mid sized battery. The larger battery would cut a quarter acre. I use 2 mid size. String loads easily but gets tangled sometimes. Loud, so you need earplugs. This model is more like a gas trimmer. You can hurt yourself. The only complaint is that there is not enough debris shield. I've never had so much debris hitting my face. A better shield could be an optional attachment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good trimmer to have around I worked for the city's park department and used a high end gas trimmer every day. This might not be as powerful as a big gas motor, but it still has the power to edge your yard or take out a patch of weeds. My dad has one and was chopping weeds with quarter to half inch diameter stock with out much trouble. I like that I don't need to mix gas, it's light weight and it doesn't get hot when you are using it. But it has good power.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good trimmer I got this for Mother's Day this year. Used it for the first time two days ago. Works great, love the fact that I don't have to mess with gas or cord. It is a bit heavy for me, so I could only spend about 30 minutes using it before my arms got tired. Overall, I am looking forward to using it in place of my small gas powered mower to trim. I have a riding mower to cut the yard. The battery used about half the charge in this time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Had for over a year and love it i use it to do full yard which is half acre fenced with trees seperate garage deck in middle of yard and lots of trees i need two charges to do it all if i wanted a second batter or replacment i would buy a nother implemet like blower or hedge trimmer ill never go back to gas this is two easy i do first half till dead charge while picking up sticks and mowing than do second half again to easy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No Need For Gasoline or A Power Cord I bought this battery powered trimmer because I was tired of spending time mixing gasoline and oil and pulling the starting cord many time to get the gasoline motor to start. Choke and pull, what a waste of time. This trimmer does a wonderful job cutting grass around the house, fence, trees, and swing set. I wish I had invested in a battery power trimmer years ago. I would highly recommend this RYOBI 40 volt trimmer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this trimmer! I purchased this trimmer to replace my older gas powered trimmer that I was having some problems with. As I did some research while looking to purchase another gas powered trimmer I saw an advertisement for the Ryobi Battery powered trimmer. The idea of not having to deal with the problems that sometimes come with gas powered trimmers appealed to me as well as the ecological benefits of a rechargeable tool. I have a fairly large yard and I was a bit skeptical that I would be able to trim my yard with only a single charge but I was very surprised to find that I can do the whole yard on one charge and there is often charge still left over. I love the "fuel gauge" on the battery that tells you the level of charge left and the fact that it charges fairly quickly. I am looking forward to purchasing some of the attachments for this unit to allow me to use this tool for more than one task.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I bought this trimmer after using the same model that my neighbor owned for half the summer! The power and reliability of the 40V battery never fails to impress. The simplicity of not having to mess with a 2 stroke makes it easy enough to operate that my wife and teenagers now volunteer to do the trimming. I would by this again and highly recomend it for anyone considering a new trimmer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works like a charm! I was tired of gas trimmers that would take about 60 pulls to get started so I went elec. and since I'm a ryobi fan I went ahead and gave this a try. I must say I am so happy and love trimming the yard again!! I have used it about 7 time and haven't had a problem yet. And there is a full spool of string it comes with so straight out of the box you are ready to go. Extremely satisfied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best weed eating tool ever I have had this tool for almost a year now. It is the best weed eating tool I have ever used, light weight, battery lasts for about an hour of hard use, much quieter than gas powered tools and just as powerful. Battery is expensive but well worth it, immediate starting and stoping at the finger squeeze of the switch. Looking forward to purchasing the expand it blower attachment next.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great everything! I bought this because I can't start a regular string trimmer. I am 67 and not very strong but I can use my Ryobi string trimmer all around my house and buildings. I bought an extra battery and have them charged when I am ready to start. It is lightweight and easy to handle but it is tough. I Love it! Also have the blower and hedge trimmer. Love the ease of using them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding! I was really tired of my gas trimmers and decided to give this a shot. I used it all last season and was impressed with the power and battery life. In addition, the noise level is a lot easier on the ears and I don't smell of exhaust. I have since moved to a larger property and may consider an extra battery. I have and will continue to recommend this trimmer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome trimmer I replaced my Ryobi gas trimmer with the new 40v Ryobi trimmer. Best purchase I have ever made. It's light weight and very easy to operate. The expand it tools I bought for the old trimmer work on this one. Seemed to have more power (torque) than the gas models. After I trimmed and edged the front and back yards, I still had two dots left on the battery!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Job rated for my yard I have used the trimmer for over a year. Works every time. Battery is still good, charges fast, and holds the charge. For example, this spring it still had it's charge from last fall. The variable speed extends the time before needing a charge. Excellent trimming around walks and edging. Tip: Lube the string exit hole for a bit better string release

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very powerful Very happy with this product. Didn't give it 5 stars because I guess after not using it that much in the winter battery stop charging to full capacity. But went back to Home Depot and it was replaced. Make sure you register the product as soon as you get it home. Haven't had any more problems and don't have to worry about bad gas. It's the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing to use! Great product! This trimmer is easy to use - light, quick power, and makes trimming stressless. The string is easy to replace and comes out when needed. With other trimmers, my back hurt after a few minutes, but I can trim the whole yard with this trimmer without pain. No worries when using this trimmer - strongly recommended!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product Bought this to simplify my life. My wife is usually unable to get a gas trimmer or chainsaw started. She does help out in the yard, so these products help her help me!!! While it's not quite "as powerful as gas" as they say, it is plenty strong for normal edging and trimming. But not super strong to clean up tall dense weeds.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great electric trimmer Plenty of power for a cordless. I have battery to spare after trimming a medium-sized yard to use with the compatible blower. Quieter and no maintenance like a gas trimmer. Only downside is it takes some time to get up to speed. Not a a deal breaker, but an annoyance that requires adjusting how you run a trimmer if used to gas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME PRODUCT I was very hesitant to purchase a battery operated weed-eater. After constant hassle with my old gas weed-eater I purchased this RYOBI Weed-eater. WOW!!! Light, easy to use, excellent power. I even purchased the brush cutter and it has enough power to clear off land that has grown over. Wish I had owned this for many years!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from little vibration on the hands I have a problem with my hands and the little vibration helps out alot. Once again loving everytime i use it

What is the best way to cut weeds and grass using my string trimmer?

  • Keep your string trimmer tilted toward the area being cut
  • Pass the unit from left to right (if using a curved shaft string trimmer) and from right to left (if using a straight shaft string trimmer). By following these directional cutting paths, you will avoid having debris and grass clippings from being directed back at yourself.
  • Use the top of the line to do the cutting. Do not force the string head into uncut grass; this could cause the trimmer to bog down.
  • Avoid trees, shrubs wire and picket fences.

How do I advance the line on my REEL-EASY™ String Head?

Line advance is controlled by tapping the string trimmer head on grass while running engine at full throttle

  • Run the engine at full throttle
  • Tap the knob on ground to advance line. The line advances each time the knob is tapped. Do not hold the knob on the ground

NOTE: The line trimming cut-off blade on the grass deflector will cut the line to the correct length

NOTE: If the line is worn too short, you may not be able to advance the string by tapping it on the ground. If so, stop the engine and manually advance the line.

How do I manually advance the line on my REEL-EASY™ String Head?

  • Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire to ensure you will not be harmed
  • Push the knob in while pulling on line(s) to manually advance the line

How do I replace the line on my REEL-EASY™ String Head?

  • Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire to ensure you will be safe while replacing the line.
  • Rotate the spool clockwise as necessary to align the arrows on the spool.
  • Cut one piece of trimmer line at approx. 20ft. in length. Insert the line in the eyelet on the string trimmer housing. Push until the end of the line comes out the opposite side of the string head. Pull the line from the other side until equal amounts of line are on both sides of the spool.
  • Rotate the spool clockwise to wind the line on the spool until approx. 6 in. of line is showing on each side.
  • Push the spool retainer down while pulling on line(s) to manually advance line and to check for proper assembly of the on the string head.

How do I remove the attachment from my RYOBI Power Head?

  • Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug (if a gas unit), remove the battery (if using RYOBI 40V Power Head)
  • Loosen the knob at the connection point
  • Push in the button and twist the shafts to remove and separate the Power Head from the Attachment

How do I install my attachment to my RYOBI Power Head?

  • Stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug (if using a RYOBI Gas Power Head); remove the battery (if using the RYOBI 40V Power Head).
  • Loosen the knob on the coupler of the power head shaft and remove the end cap from the attachment (black rubber piece with loop hole for hanging).
  • Push in the silver button located on the attachment shaft. Align the button with the guide recess on the Power Head coupler and slide the two shafts together. Rotate the attachment shaft until the button locks into the positioning hole.

NOTE: If the button does not release completely in the positioning hole, the shafts are not locked into place. Slightly rotate from side to side until the button is locked into place.

  • Tighten the knob securely.

How do I attach the grass deflector on my RYOBI Cordless String Trimmer?

  • Remove the battery.
  • Remove the plastic hardware bag from the grass deflector.
  • Fit the grass deflector over the string head.
  • Line up the screw holes in the grass deflector with the holes in the motor housing.
  • Install supplied screws and tighten by turning clockwise with a phillips screwdriver.

How do I start and stop my RYOBI Cordless String Trimmer?

To Start:

  • Press and hold the lock-out button.
  • Depress the switch trigger

To Stop:
