Zeke's Rocking Horse

  • February 19, 2015

My first Grandson was born last May. Just getting into "serious" woodworking and wanted to build him something for Christmas. I came across “Woodworkers Fighting Cancer” project from 2009. It was just the right project for my skill level and time. Did not like the pine panels available so I glued up 1x4 clear pine. That was challenge #1 - getting a flat panel. My Ryobi random orbital sander help me "flatten" the glue joints. Challenge #2 - Using different color stains on the same piece. Used a wood burning tool to provide a groove to separate the colors. Challenge #3 getting a good even stain. It's pine so it was some what blotchy even after using wood conditioner. However after reapplication of stain in several areas, the end product came out looking "antique" which is great for a rocking horse that maybe passed down to future generations. Everyone loved it (Hopefully Zeke will too) on Christmas day.
