Wine Barrel Counter

Last weekend I decided to finally get around to doing something with a couple of old wine barrels we got last winter, so I built this counter/bar for our patio using some reclaimed wood from an old fence we demo'd a couple of years ago. The only new wood we used was one 8ft redwood 2x2 to create a cantilever overhang to make sitting more comfortable. Otherwise all the wood is reclaimed cedar fence boards and redwood 2x2s from an old trellis.

The cedar and redwood should make this pretty impervious to our rainy winters, but I'll need to treat the oak barrels with some Tung oil before the rainy season starts. I spent some time rifling through our pile of old fence boards to find some interesting texture/grain. To make sure they were clean and sound I used a stiff bristle brush and some light sanding to prep them. There was no actual design on paper, I just figured it out as I went.

The family is happy with the results so far. It's a nice spot for a light breakfast and it will be great for a prep and serving area for my grill. The cantilever was a last minute addition to make sitting more comfortable and also to raise the whole surface up to the correct height for standard bar stools. Since the barrels are such heavy Oak, the counter with the cantilever is VERY stable, but to make sure it won't tip I'll be adding sand to both barrels to make sure they won't go anywhere.
