TV stand and motivational signs

I wanted to install a home gym area to our basement for a Christmas gift so I purchased some equipment but still needed the finishing touches.
I built a TV stand as well as a ball holder and a few motivational signs. I didn't want to purchase anything to new and shiny and have it look out of place since it is in the basement which isn't a finished room. I used scrap wood for the signs and purchased new wood for the TV stand. The signs are all hand painted which was probably the most time consuming task. I hung the signs from the rafters with chain to make it more of an industrial theme. This was all built a few months ago and hidden so that it could be revealed on Christmas as a gift.
It has been a terrific success in the house as the family has been working out together. It is also been very rewarding seeing my work being put to use. It has definitely transformed the space and made it an enjoyable space.

  • Thanks for all of the positive comments. The TV stand was easy to build because I used Rigid Tie corner connectors that can be purchased from Home Depot in a workbench/shelving kit: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Simpson-Strong-Tie-Workbench-or-Shelving-Hardware-Kit-WBSK/205177374?MERCH=REC-_-PIPHorizontal1_rr-_-204834336-_-205177374-_-N I happen to already have these from a previous build so it saved a bit of money. All you have to do it cut the 2x4's to the size you desire and assembly is easy as the screws are self drilling. There are a lot of screws so prepare for to be using your drill/driver a bit. I also added a 2x4 in the middle of each of the longer 2x4's to help support the future shelves. I wanted to prevent any sagging and give it a bit more strength. I pre-drilled these using a counter sink bit to give it a clean look. Once it all came together I used 1x6's for the shelves. I simply cut to size and a one again pre-drilled using a counter sink bit. I did the shelves in order from bottom, middle to top to make sure it was easy to access. The middle shelf I simply mounted a piece of wood to support it at each end of the stand and put it at the appropriate height for my needs. I didn't feel a need for glue on this project due to corner connectors which are incredibly strong. I went back and used wood filler to cover the screw heads and any major blemishes. I sanded every step of the way and when I thought it was smooth enough I sanded even more. I wanted to ensure a smooth to the touch and prevent any splinters. I finished it with Minwax classic gray stain. I hope that you can make sense of my rambling. It was very easy to build but be aware that using all the lumber I used makes it HEAVY.
