The Fern Hollow Farm

Advanced age (I’m 81) and chronic low back pain almost forced me to give up my passion for vegetable gardening. So knowing it would be difficult to keep bending over to work in the soil, I decided to bring the soil to me! I built these elevated garden boxes from pressure treated 2x8s, 4x4s, 2x4s, and 5/4”x6” deck boards, then built a beautiful fence around the garden (using 4x4s, 2x6s and cattle panels) to keep the deer away from my veggies! I cut all the boards to length in my shop, then assembled the boxes and fence using 3 1/2” deck screws driven with my trusty 18-volt Ryobi variable power drill. It was the toughest project I’ve undertaken yet, but will probably not be my last!

  • Great work, well layed out. Hope I can still build stuff this nice in my 80's! 62 this year, still feeling like I got a lot left!

  • Wonderful & quite the showplace!   I’ve got the same “problem” with bending over...  Really like your fencing solution.  Instead of incorporating into the bed itself, the separate fence allows much needed access to all sides of all beds.  Thanks for sharing this.
