Spalted Maple Bowl

When I first designed this bowl, three years ago, I didn’t have the right skills to build it. The processes involved a number of precise cuts and three different glue ups. Unfortunately, I only captured one of the glue ups.
The main species of wood used in this project was a spalted maple. The spalting created amazing purples, oranges and blues. There was also a spalted ash that produced greys and blues.
This was the first time I have used this design. There where a number of challenges in completing this bowl. The angle cuts and glue ups created tons of problems, but I learned from my mistakes and hopefully next time it will go a little better.

  • Absolutely stunning bowl. The patterns are spectacular. How long does it take to make such an intricate bowl?

    • This bowl took about three years of practicing the skills needed to develop the design. The actual bowl took about 20-25 hours, plus glue up times and wood selection/cutting to size. All the wood I use is harvested locally and has to be milled, cured and then cut to workable sizes. It usually takes 4-5 separate sessions with a planer before a bowl “blank” is ready for shaping.
I am so glad you like it! The spalting in this bowl is spectacular, I almost didn’t use this maple because it was such a special piece.
