My wife's father built her an ammo-style box many years ago, and we decided to take his basic design to build a new one that we may be able to sell to generate some additional income. Our construction method was to use pine material with a biscuit tool and glue so it will be a strong, sturdy box that will last a lifetime of use. The handles on the side of the box were the greatest challenge, because I routed out an area inside the bottom of them so the hands could get a good grip on the box. Our tools included a table saw, router table, biscuit tool, drill, hammer, orbital and finishing sanders, square, glue and hinges.
