My wife loves our big cushy couch but hates that she can't put her cup of tea anywhere since our couch just barely fits against against the walls in our family room. We have about a 4in gap between one of the walls so I thought, huh, why don't I use a 1x4" to make a table top? And that's where the inspiration came from. I was originally going to just make a simple box frame style table, but wanted more support for it since I have toddlers in the house. I decided to use 1x2" rails on the side that doubles as a basket to hold magazines or blankets. I made sure to keep the bottom of the table smooth and shaped it to be a sort of sled so it could easily slide in and out for access to the magazines or blankets. I varnished the top after I stained it. My wife absolutely loves the table because she can store her books and keep her tea from spilling all while enjoying our cushy couch!
