Rustic barn wall with farmhouse "home" sign

My wife and I just moved into our new home and felt our living room was missing something. We both love the rustic, farmhouse style home decor and wanted something interesting to bring out that exact feel in our living room-something guests will immediately see as they enter the house. So we decided on a homemade barn wood wall. We used fence pickets and spent our sunny Saturday staining 40 pickets a variety of colors that we thought would accent each other. We then spent another weekend carefully cutting, each board to length to fit around our pellet stove insert fireplace perfectly, while also making the design look random. After a long day, we were done!
However we decided we needed one more piece to accent our new wall. So my wife talked me into a great "Home" sign that we could work on together. So we used a standard 2x12 and carefully drawing out each letter (minus the O) and cutting them out on the bandsaw. We gently waxed each letter after they were sanded and distressed and started painting. The wax caused the white paint to stick to the lower parts of the grain of the wood and not stick to the raised grain. After several coats of paint with sanding in between we got a nice, rustic, whitewash/aged white finish on the letters. We hung the letters on the wall and used a decorative wreath as the "O" to bring a little more life and color to the design, as many others before us have done.
And that's it! We had a blast doing these projects and have many more to do together to create a custom farmhouse feel for our new home. It's so much fun finding ideas and creating it ourselves and putting our own spin on it, while also spending time together doing something fun and productive. We are excited about our new hobby together!
