I had been looking for a re-use for some old fence pickets, when my wife mentioned that she would like to have a potting bench. Looking for inspiration and dimensions on the web, I decided to build a bench with a a back, with a small shelf, and a storage shelf underneath. The challenge was to find enough solid cedar from the old fence pickets for the longer pieces needed, including the spear shape at the top of the pickets, as some of the tops and bottoms of the pickets had rotted. My wife loves the bench, as well as many FB friends, and has already used it a couple of times. Being all solid cedar, I was surprised at how little the bench weighs.
