I was amazed at how easy this project was!!! A friend asked me if I could build a poster bed for her father. She had been looking for one like he had when he was young and could not find one anywhere. She described it to me so I set about building one. I found some very nice Douglas Fir posts at Home Depot and selected some cypress common boards and started framing up two simple boxes and then purchased bed rail brackets for the side boards. Last I picked out some thin stock to make inserts for the headboard and footboard and stained the frame in Honey Minwax and the inserts in Early American Minwax. The Douglas Fir woodgrain is very unique - on one side it's tight and linear and on the other side it is wavy and random and it created a very impressive finish. I completed it with three layers of clear gloss poly. I found some custom made wooden finials and topped the corner posts with them. Nothing about this project was difficult. I felt like I was making great progress as a new carpenter.
