Poolside Pergola

This contest entry got us motivated to complete a project that we had on our "to-do, wish-list" for some time! The summer sun by our pool mid afternoon is intense and with the early stages of skin cancer we wanted to build a sun shelter to suit. In celebrating 19 years of marriage we had the opportunity to travel to Cuba with our children last year which was a first with our family. At the resort, we enjoyed hours by a pool with a pergola that had a neat sun shade and so we took pictures and planned out our own. This spring it is finally complete and we're thrilled with the outcome. We're so looking forward to the summer with this 8 by 12 foot pergola that includes a sun shade. Just looking back at our pool with this pergola is already relaxing as we envision Cuba and what this meant for our family. This project idea motivated my husband to work at getting this completed and we've had time to relax under it too!

  • Beautiful -- Did something similar over my sun soaked deck years ago, but... Made the first panels out of duck fabric, which is about the same as painters cloth. Looked gorgeous for the first couple of months, then it looked like the mold police took over. I have no idea why, and bleach did nothing to remedy the problem, so I switched to SunBrella fabric, which I found at a reasonable price at "Outdoorfabrics.com". (No, I am not affiliated with the company.) I also made the end seams larger, so I could use copper tubing to weight down the ends.
