Outdoor Rustic Modern Coffee Table

I needed a coffee table for our backyard so I decided to go with a rustic modern design.
Half inch plywood was used as the base of the table and some 1x4" boards cut at a 45 degree angle was used on top to give that chevron pattern. I used different color minwax stains and randomly stained the boards (mixing and matching some stains as well) to give it that rustic look. For a midcentury modern touch, I decided to use some metal hairpin legs. I sealed it off with some glossy spar urethane. It turned out looking great in our backyard.

The size of the table is 4'x 2' and about 17" tall.
Feel free to ask me any questions :)

  • Looks great! What did you use for the edges and how did you attach? How did you attach the 1'x 4' to plywood. Do you have any step by step directions. Thank you very much!

  • looks awesome! love the rustic modern look, will build something like this soon

  • Babe13, the 1x4 boards are glued on and clamped. Edging was just some 1x2 boards mitered and attached with glue/brad nails.

  • Was it made from a 1000-year-old tree on the side of Mount Olympus. Struck by lightning, and carved by monks using the horn of a unicorn?

By Ryon Hunt, on June 15, 2016
    • It has to be the monks carving with the horn of a unicorn. There's no other way. No normal Ryobi tool would be able to build this.
