New Table for a New family

I wasn't always a handyman as I am now today. I started off with small projects around the house that I wanted or needed for things I could not afford to buy. I am still a student in a community college working towards a degree in Nursing which is opposite of what I did in the Marines. As of November 8th 2014 I am now married and have plans on having a child with my wonderful wife within a year. A few months ago my now wife and I were talking at our small coffee table watching TV when she said, "I would really love an actual dinner table to sit down at and have family meals". This would start my biggest project so far, after some research and planning plus a few weekends when I wasn't studying I made a farmhouse table. Most of the tools I used I received from my father, after he passed away a few years ago. Some of the problems I ran into were notching out the 2x4 parts which slide into the outside legs. Only having a table saw and a miter-saw (both 15+ years of age) this slowed me down. It wasn't until I had and old plug in drill break while working, did I discover the new cordless drills out there from Ryobi. As a student I'm already tight on money so the cost of the tools helped out a lot, plus the time saved from having to screw everything by hand helped out a lot too. The finished project is amazing, I took my time and it will hold up to time as well. The table is something that I hope to pass down to my children late in my life just as I received my father's tools.

  • Really nice looking and very functional for a large family. Yes sir, no more setting up a card table for the kids to sit at during a family gathering.

  • Beautiful solution to meet your family's need. I have a similar dilemma with the size of my family especially on special occasions. How would I go about getting your dimensions and a material list? Great job!!
