Murphy Bed

  • November 12, 2014

Needed a comfortable bed for out of town friends and family to use when they came to visit. Did not have an extra bedroom or space for a bed. Purchased the hardware and went to work creating this piece of furniture.
Decided to build using hard maple boards and plywood sheets. Staining was difficult as maple tends to splotch because of the grain density varies. Also compounding the problem was the difference in the solid boards and the plywood after sanding. The boards could be sanded as much as needed, but the plywood veneer was thin and could only be lightly sanded. Used gel stain for the first time and was surprised how easy it was to control the stain color and application. I will use gel stain for future projects.
I am very pleased with the finished product.
