I built this desk with function in mind. A solid 1" top, 4 grommets ( 1 with USB and audio ports) and wire management clips on the back inside rail. The left drawer is flat inside and offers a perfect place to charge our tablets and the right drawer is just a small pencil drawer. The top is 1" Maple with an MDF core wrapped with solid 1-1/2" mahogany. The base is pine stained with a dark ebony stain to conceal the fact it's pine. I used my Ryobi laminate trimmer to run a 3/16" chamfer on the maple top and then painted it black. After I attached the mahogany trim I stained it and filled the quirk the chamfer created with clear silicone. I've got probably 4 coats of poly on this to create a smooth transition over the quirk.
