The home we purchased is a foreclosure that needed lots of work. The fireplace brick was in good shape but for whatever reason the previous owner took the mantel (and many other things) with them. We sketched up a few ideas and decided to go with a simple design consisting of tiered walnut.
We attached small pieces of walnut around the corners using pocket screws and wood glue so each tier wraps around to meet the wall. The richness of the walnut came out great with a few coats of polyurethane.
