Man Cave Remodel

Recently moved into a new house with a very large unfinished basement. Myself and my father in-law decided to tackle the remodel ourselves. Neither of us have any professional building credentials but wanted to give it a try. I took a 600 square foot room and added drywall to the ceiling and walls, put a new laminate floor down and then built a large custom bar. Bar top was made with 2x4's that were then covered with 3 coats of epoxy. In the end the project took about a year of weekends to complete. We had many obstacles that we had to trouble shoot, but the outcome was far better than expected.

  • Very interested in more details about how you got the 2x4's to look so good. Did they start out as standard Kiln Dried Fir? Did you plane them down after glueing them? What product did you coat them with and did you stain them first? I ask all of this because I am setting out on a child workbench project that I want to make a similar top for.
