It's All About the Wood

Our guest bathroom was in sad shape. The little bowling alley room was ready for a makeover. Everything came out except the tub. While at the home improvement store, I started looking for lumber to build the vanity and mirror surround. I came across poplar and started going through the piles. I found some beautiful mineral stained poplar and bought all they had. The next few weeks were spent going to home improvement stores all across the county, looking for that beautiful wood. Finally I had enough for my project. I learned about polyurethane. There are different finishes and I experimented until I had the look I wanted. The end result was stunning. Word got out about the project and neighbors started lining up to get a look. Until I shopped for lumber, I didn't realize that poplar was so beautiful.

  • Wow your poplar is gorgeous. My poplar boards are green streaked. Great job.

  • I've done more than a few projects with poplar. Like Amy, if it has nice color variation, they are green or even purple streaked. What stain did you use? I love your cabinets! Great job.
