Gate Archway

I used Asian inspiration to design and built this over gate archway/art display. By mixing pressure treated 2x12 and Fir 2x12 I achieved the finished colors with linseed oil and beeswax. There was a lot of challenges in installing this piece 10’ off the ground by myself.
Additionally, creating parallel curves using only a jigsaw and a few sanders (I didn’t have a table saw at the time of this project) took a lot of figuring and working. I wasn’t able to locate the black iron hardware I needed in the correct time frame so I painted standard carriage bolts with black appliance paint.

  • Nice addition to your fence! What was most challenging for you?

    • The biggest challenge was not having the appropriate tools for the job. As an example, I really needed a drill press. I used a level and the one+ drill/driver to drill holes through both sides of the 2x12, 4x4, 2x12 stack. Additionally, I did some creative hammering to get the 7” carriage bolts through evenly.

    • I will say that getting the 60-75 lbs. structure 10’ in the air and over the two support 4x4s, by myself, caused it’s own set of challenges.  Some creative lever and pulley actions mixed with moving blankets, bar clamps and extending ladders somehow made it happen. Stressful!!

    • Looks like you definitely overcame those obstacles and it turned out really nicely!
