My son and his wife are expecting their first child in April. They have a small room available for the nursery. We had previously built a desk into the closet. The only reasonable place for a changing area was on top the desk but the area seemed too enclosed so I told them that I should be able to build a slide out changing drawer. I needed to build a unit that would be sturdy, yet not be too hard to remove after no longer needed. The opening was 27 inches deep and 30 inches wide. Most changing table pads are 30 to 34 inches long, so I needed as much of the width as possible. That meant that I needed to place the slides on rails (mounted to the base unit) inside the sides of the drawer. The changing drawer bottom was raised 2 inches from the bottom of the sides to allow for the slides. I was able to create 3 separate compartments in the rear since I only needed 16 1/2 inches of the 27 inches depth for the changing pad. The rear middle compartment bottom was dropped the full height of the drawer since it was between the slides. The base unit contains a drawer 27 inches wide by 26 inches deep by about 2 1/2 inches high. I was able to sit the unit on top the desk and attach it to studs in the back wall with 2 screws.
