Deck and Pergola

I moved into an old 1927 home with no deck or porch in the back yard. My wife asked for a place her and our young children could enjoy the backyard with some shade and a place to get away at night or entertain friends. From there, I drew up plans for a simple 15’ x 15’ ground level deck that featured a 12’ x 12’ pergola and a counter for serving food. I worked little by little each weekend - by myself as my wife cared for our children - to bring the idea to life. I’m still surprised with the results, and I couldn’t have done it without my Ryobi 12” sliding chop saw and Ryobi power drill!

  • Super great job on this pergola! What was your favorite part of this build?

    • My favorite part of this was just learning as I went. I had plans, and the plans kept changing as we decided on different features. I’ve also never built with composite decking before, so the whole thing - from new materials to researching and finding my own pergola design - I really loved the ability to take my time on this and learn.

  • Beautiful work, and that you did it by yourself is most commendable. Bravo!!!
