Closed concept to Open (Kitchen, Dining, Living)

  • July 16, 2016

My wife and I purchased this house as a bank repo. The money we saved afforded us to design it how we wanted. The entryway, living room, dining room, and kitchen were all divided. An engineer had to calculate the dimensions for the beam I needed (span of 23-25ft). I was able to build two temporary walls on both sides of where the beam was being installed. Since the beam was 16" wide I needed to install the beam up into the 2nd level floor joists.

Doing all the work myself was not only rewarding but also saved us a ton of money. Not to mention, the money we saved by having a HD within 3 miles and their 10% military discount was just the icing on the cake! In-stock hardwood flooring, had to order the quartz countertop and cabinets, backsplash was on a clearance end cap, In-stock french door. Appliances were purchased from a generous couple on CL for a great price.

  • What an overhaul! This is truly an enormous project to have undertaken on your own. You should be really proud- the result is phenomenal! The decor looks perfect for the space, too. You and your wife certainly have great taste. Did this project take a while from start to finish?
