Church Pews for El Higueral

  • January 5, 2018

In the mountains of El Salvador is a village of 250 souls called "El Higueral". Over the past 20 years, little by little, they have been building a church. When the tile floor was finally laid in 2013, the community needed to replace the brick and board benches with real pews. In an area as remote as this, access to tools and materials is scarce. Many tools were donated and starting with a Ryobi Combo package, Ryobi was chosen as the batteries could power many different tools.
Ryobi is not sold in El Salvador, so the tools had to be brought with visiting groups. Over the next few years the community collected many tools and were finally ready to begin the church pew project. For the lumber, trees needed to be harvested and cut into lumber, dried, various designs tried, and finally production of 18 pews. The man mainly responsible for the construction is Cristobal (Toba) Gutiérrez who has, with the help of Ryobi tools, become one of the chief carpenters of the village.
