I was inspired by my eight grandchildren to build a chicken coop because I wanted them to have some experience of farm life in this busy world. They each have named and banded their own chicken. One of the challenges I had to overcome was to make the coop larger to have enough space for eight chickens since the original size was for four chickens. It took some figuring and adjusting the dimensions to accomplish this. Fortunately, because I planned on how I was going to build it, there were no surprises. The grandchildren are thrilled and I have gotten many compliments on how clever and good looking it is. When the chickens lay their eggs in the custom built laying boxes which open up on the side of the coop it will be easy to collect the eggs. By doing this project, I learned to modify plans to fit what I wanted to accomplish. I made the barn door and screen door so the chickens are safe from predators and also have plenty of ventilation. The nesting boxes are also easy to clean because of the way they open.
