We had a perfectly usable bird feeder until my wife decided she wanted her birds to have a little bit nicer restaurant for their dining pleasure. So I undertook the task of building a feeder that met her expectations. I tried to keep the roof low enough to keep out unwanted critters, but high enough so the birds felt welcome. While the birds definitely feel welcome, so do loads of other critters. Using cedar shims for the shake roof, it really looks inviting, and they were easy to install. It is easily accessible for filling, plus gives us great views from our windows. Mounted on 3" PVC pipes set in and filled with concrete, it is sturdy enough even for our biggest guests. I think my wife is happy with the final design.
