Barn Door Media Console

This media console was inspired by plans I had found from a Shanty 2 Chic design. I wanted a console that would incorporate all of our media needs, with a special focus on our record player and vinyl collection. The base of the console was made from 3/4" plywood, while the top was made from a one inch slab of beautiful sinker cypress. This project was a two year wedding anniversary gift for my wonderful wife and it completely exceeded her expectations. The center piece box and blanket ladder seen in the photos were also made using plans from Shanty 2 Chic. The console table measures 78-1/2" long x 20" wide x 36" height.

  • Beautifully built! What was the hardest part of building it?
By RYOBI NATION, on August 30, 2018

  • Thank you! The hardest part would have to be constructing the base with all the big pieces. Luckily I had help to line everything up in the beginning. Coming up with a design for storing the records was also a task because I wanted an adjustable book end style to hold the records up. I went with a dovetail design and it worked out great. I would also say that measuring for the barn door kit is a bit tricky and doesn’t leave much wiggle room for error. Definitely learned a lot during the build and my ryobi tools were invaluable.

  • I love the Cypress top.  I can't tell if you used epoxy on the knot.  That is a beautiful piece of wood.  Typically not seen much in my parts.
I really love the fact you designed it around your vinyl collection.  You're saying my old collection has a chance of coming out of my closet?

  • Thanks! I considered using epoxy for the knot but chose to keep the piece as natural as possible. I did spend quite a bit of time cleaning out the dirt and debris in that area but all in all I have to say I loved working with cypress and I am very happy I chose to go with it. Your vinyl collection definitely has a chance! I feel a good record set up always starts up a good conversation. FREE THE VINYL!
