I saw this project on Ryobi Nation around the time my friends announced they were expecting. We built it for them as a gift. The original plans called for backing around the bottom shelf and the spaces in the top, but we decided to leave everything open. We built it out of Maple and Birch because the original plan was to stain it. When the stain didn't take, we ended up painting it. The hardwood makes it feel really stable and durable. It was tough drilling the pocket holes in the Maple though!
