After making a couple of book planters, I had a ton of extra squares of scrap book pages. I also had a beat-up old trunk that my brother and I used in college, so it suffered a lot of abuse in moving and use. The idea came to me to pull off all the silver hardware on the trunk and redo the whole thing with a book theme. After pulling of the hardware, I found that the wood was falling apart and the staples no longer held the trunk's shape, which led to rebuilding the box with wood glue, staples, and a few nails. Once rebuilt, the modpodging of the pages was quick. Then it took several weeks to decide on what else to put on the trunk and prepare everything - sewing the burlap inlay (another leftover from a previous craft), ordering the brass hardware and faux leather, and figuring out which adhesives worked best for which materials. Definitely worth all the work! I love my new trunk, and I've gotten a lot of compliments. Although next time, I'd just build the trunk from scratch.
