If its a varnish laquor or shellac you can use Formbys furniture refinisher, if its paint or polyurathane you can use Formbys paint and poly remover. Following the instructions on the can remove the existing finish down to bare wood. Use your favorite Ryobi sander and some 220 grit sand paper to remove any of the left over finish and to clean up the surface.
