3D Rustic Wooden Flag

One last flag...lol... I'm not looking for a win, just thought I'd share this with you. A very easy project with a cool effect. I made a 3D rustic flag from 2x4s. I cut all my 2x4 pieces out, then I drew a wave along the side of one of the 2x4s and cut the pattern out with my band saw. I then traced the same pattern onto all of the other pieces and then cut them all out as well. Then I took my torch and burned all of the "red" stripes. Then I glued and nailed it all together, by stacking one at a time onto eachother and nailing into the sides. Then once together, I burnt the whole flag one more time, including the "white" stripes, to give it a more rustic feel. Then I sprayed a matte finish on it, this helps prevent the ash/burnt pieces from smudging. Then finally, carve your stars by using a dremel, and you have yourself a great looking wall hanging!! It's a very cheap project, and very easy to make. :)

  • Wow! That 3-D effect is stunning! This is truly a work of art. One of your best pieces yet! (Find ourselves saying that a lot lately! ha ha!)

    • Thanks!!..I just felt like sharing this method to anyone who thought on making a flag. It's cheap and fairly easy to do. The 3D wave really makes it come to life. Once I made this flag, I no longer plan to make the flat traditional wooden flags, that I've made in the past.

  • Do you have plans for this project?

    • Sorry I don't. It was a build as you go, type of project. Hopefully the pictures and description can help you out.  :)

  • I understand, can you tell me the overall measurement (length & width) and the dimensions of the star area. Thanks
By kronicmib, on November 3, 2018
    • Well I cut the stripes down to be 1 3/4" thick. Which will make your flag 22 3/4" tall overall, and I made them 40" long. So the flag is 22 3/4" x 40". As for the field/star area, it would end up being 12 1/4" high X however long you want to make it. I always based that measurement off of preference. Whatever you think it would look best for you. Then I would make a stencil for the stars, trace them on, then carve out with a dremel tool.
