Add ceiling to 2-story living room to make a recreation room
A cathedral-ceiling living room looks nice, but it doesn't do anything else, and we realized that we have to heat and cool that wasted space. So I thought it would be a great benefit to our family to make a room out of it by adding a ceiling at 8'. The problem is, I've never done anything like this--I'm a teacher who has almost no handyman skills. Plus, I have very few tools. The biggest challenge was simply starting--I wasn't sure I could do it. But my friends were supportive, and my father-in-law helped me do it. Before we started, I went out and bought $400 in Ryobi 18v tools--they had a good reputation, and look cool, too :)
We are now 1 week in, and about half done--the ledger boards are up, the joists are up, and half of the plywood floor is up. Everybody is amazed that a bookworm could renovate his house! We are looking forward to using our new recreation room.
2x10x16 feet joists, joist hangers, 3/8" lag bolts, lots of deck screws, 2x4 for framing, 4x8 3/4" tongue and groove plywood
