Week Three - Planting and Mulching
In Video 2: Creating Landscape Beds, we showed you how to plan out and shape the landscape beds around your patio. In this segment, Serena from Thrift Diving walks you through how to finish off the landscaping around your patio by planting and mulching.
Step 1: Picking Your Plants
Incorporating plants like flowers and shrubs is a step that will completely transform your patio with a rich, colorful border.
Choose plants that will thrive in your climate and check if they need shade or sunlight. Take into account the potential height of the plant, plus the color and shape of the leaves.
Step 2: Adding the Plants
Place them around the bed first to determine how you want them laid out. Then, plant away!
Step 3: Filling In With Mulch
To really make it pop, fill in the landscape bed with mulch. Mulch is great because it improves the visual appeal of your landscape beds, holds in nutrients and moisture, and helps to prevent weeds.
There are many types of mulch to choose from. Where you live and your style preferences will help with your choice. Hardwood mulches are a very common choice for creating a crisp border and come in a variety of colors that can be purchased by the bag or truckload.
Another option is pine straw, which is inexpensive and more common down south but gives your landscape a more natural look. There are a number of other options available, like rock, pea gravel or even a live ground cover.
Step 4: Clean Up
After you’re done, use the low setting on your leaf blower or a broom to clean up the loose mulch on your patio.
